WRBB Sports Concludes 2010-2011 Season
It was another year of firsts for WRBB Sports. After 87 game broadcasts across five sports, 27 different game venues, and 20,000 miles of travel, the 2010-2011 season has come to a close. For a season filled with ups and downs, it was another thrilling and innovative year of Huskies sports on WRBB.
With unprecedented mobile access to broadcasts, mobile traffic to WRBBSports.com increased a whopping 445%, as users accessed live and archived broadcasts on their iPhone, Blackberry, and Android devices in record numbers.
This year, WRBB also introduced a brand new streaming channel – WRBB Sports Extra – to cover even more Huskies sports throughout the season. The kickoff of the service in November allowed for a simultaneous broadcast of Northeastern men’s hockey in Maine and the Northeastern men’s basketball season opener against Boston University at Matthews Arena. Other events covered during the season included the Women’s Hockey East Championship and the 22nd Annual Baseball Beanpot.
It was also an award-winning year for WRBB Sports, as sports director Alex Faust won the Jim Nantz Award, given to the best collegiate sportscaster in the nation, while Jared Shafran was received honorable mention in balloting for the award.
Two seniors graduate from Northeastern and the station this year:
- Kainani Stevens, who has been a a sideline reporter on Northeastern basketball broadcasts for the past three seasons, and produced multiple Beanpot tournament games. This year, Kainani was featured on Comcast Sportsnet’s student reporter program.
- Victoria Rossi, who was a regular co-host on CAA Full Court Press, served as a producer on several Northeastern hockey and basketball broadcasts, and was a sideline reporter for multiple Northeastern basketball broadcasts.
This past season did not lack memorable moments, both good and bad. The station had the good fortune to be on hand for most of them:
- For the third consecutive year, WRBB Sports was the flagship station for Northeastern men’s basketball, covering all but one game this season (weather prohibited the crew to travel to Wilmington, N.C. for a road game). This ended a streak of 44 consecutive men’s basketball broadcasts dating back to November 2009.
- For the first time in station history, WRBB broadcast a live event from outside the United States, as the station provided live coverage of three games from the inaugural Cancun Governor’s Cup in Mexico.
- WRBB provided more coverage of men’s hockey than ever before, airing 38 of 39 games over the course of the season. For all home games, WRBB Sports served as the exclusive radio outlet for Huskies hockey. For the first time in station history, WRBB aired games from Boston University’s Agganis Arena, including the Huskies’ thrilling three-game quarterfinal series against the Terriers.
- The station’s new digital service, WRBB Sports Extra, provided additional coverage of 13 games throughout the season, including women’s basketball, women’s hockey, and Huskies baseball.
- Northeastern women’s hockey made its first trip to the Hockey East championship game, and WRBB was there with live coverage of the semifinals and title game at Walter Brown Arena.
- Meanwhile, Northeastern men’s hockey returned to the TD Garden for its second berth in the Hockey East semifinals in three seasons.
- Finally, Huskies baseball made a return to Fenway Park for the second round of the Baseball Beanpot.
Of course, WRBB is known most for its unparalleled travel commitment, allowing for comprehensive coverage of Northeastern’s marquee athletic programs pre-game, post-game, every game. This year’s travel log:
