What a weekend – four thrilling games, unfortunately followed by basketball’s letdown on Monday. But, all things being equal, the Huskies got one marquee win over the weekend, the absolutely heart-stopping overtime victory over Boston University in basketball on Friday night. If you haven’t heard the entire game broadcast, you’re in luck, because we’ve archived it (WRBB Sports), and it’s definitely worth a listen. Now comes homecoming weekend, with the last basketball home game for two weeks and the last home hockey game for three weeks.

We’ll get to the upcoming games in a moment, but first back to the week that was… Read more…

Wednesday Notebook: Field hockey surges, men’s hockey slips

October 26th, 2011

Here’s our rundown on what happened last weekend, what to look for this weekend, and what’s making news this week:

  • Field hockey sweeps but won’t catch ODU. Northeastern will not host the CAA field hockey tournament in two weeks, but through no fault of their own. Old Dominion improved to 7-0 in conference on a weekend when Northeastern swept their games at Hofstra on Friday and vs. Boston University on Sunday. Sunday’s game was the Huskies’ last home game, and (if they don’t drop any games this weekend) solidified their hopes of an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Crystal Poland scored her 25th goal of the season (which leads all of Division I), earning her CAA player of the week honors again ( Her scoring numbers are astonishing, especially when you consider that nobody else on the team even has more than 6. The Huskies finish the regular season this weekend with two road games.
  • It was a 0-point weekend for NU men’s hockey, with a loss on Friday to Merrimack (Boston Globe), then a heartbreaking loss in overtime to Boston College on Saturday (Boston Globe). More coverage of Saturday’s game from Boston Herald, College Hockey News,, Husky Hockey Blog
  • Holy Cross shocked BU over the weekend, and understandably, the team is savoring the win, writes Jennnifer Toland (Worcester Telegram). Former Huskies All-American Jason Guerriero was behind the Holy Cross bench for his first career game as an assistant coach, and was overjoyed:
First time on the bench ends with a HUGE win over Boston University 5-4. #unreal.
  • Speaking of BU, this column is making the rounds about whether Jack Parker should resign as head coach of the Terriers (Daily Free Press). There are a smattering of good points in the article: namely that Parker has seemingly failed to motivate his players of late. But honestly, the rest of this (as evidenced by the piles of laughter on Twitter – just do a bit of searching for it) is just garbage. We get that this writer was trying to be edgy and provocative, but honestly, the writer’s picture on the website coupled with the outlandish assertion that Parker has to resign is just comical.
  • Huskies legend Fernie Flaman will be inducted into the Mass Hockey Hall of Fame, a long-overdue recognition for Northeastern’s all-time winningest hockey coach (USCHO).
  • This weekend, men’s hockey is on the road in New Hampshire while the women travel up to Maine for the team’s first conference game. Both soccer teams are clinging on to CAA tournament berths, while field hockey is on the road, so the game you should be watching this weekend is Northeastern volleyball’s game against William & Mary on Friday night. The N Zone is having a costume contest, so it’s probably going to be a bit rowdy (and we wouldn’t have it any other way).
