CAA Team Previews: UNC-Wilmington Seahawks

October 21st, 2010

Next up in our continuing series of CAA previews are the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks.

2009-2010 Recap: The Seahawks struggled to a 9-21 finish, including a 5-13 record in conference. Miscues plagued UNCW as the team averaged a conference-high 15.9 turnovers per game. The team’s coaching vacancy became national news as Benny Moss was “reassigned” within the athletic department on Jan. 28 and did not have his position filled until Buzz Peterson was hired April 17. Brooks Lee took over the head coaching position in the interim, and in many ways the team’s coaching search overshadowed its play on the court.

Key Losses:

  • John Fields: The 6-foot, 9-inch Fields transferred to Tennessee in the offseason after graduating from Wilmington in the spring, and will be eligible to play immediately because he is a graduate school student. Fields was a force for the Seahawks in his one season in Wilmington after transferring from East Carolina. He was second on the team in scoring with 10.2 points per game, but his real value came in the low blocks. Fields averaged 8.7 rebounds per game, including a school-record 21 in a game against Towson, and set the Seahawks single-season record with 59 blocks. His athletic frame and good rebounding instincts led to numerous put-back dunks.
  • Johnny Wolf: Wolf transferred to UNCW after two seasons at Xavier and was a streaky shooter while in a Seahawks uniform. Last season he averaged 13.9 points per game as a junior but dipped to 7.9 last season as a senior. Opponents were careful not to send Wolf to the free throw line as he shot 88.6 percent from the stripe.
  • Dominique Lacy: Academic struggles forced the 6-foot, 7-inch forward to transfer to Division 2 USC-Aiken. A long and athletic low-post player averaged 5.5 points per game and 2.9 boards a game. Lacy led the Seahawks in scoring with 13 points in their season-ending loss to Towson in the opening round of the CAA Tournament.

Key Returns:

  • Chad Tomko: The season may very well rest on the shooting prowess of the 5-foot, 11-inch senior guard. Tomko led the team in scoring a season ago with 12.8 points per game and was tops on the team in assists with 4.3 helpers per game. Tomko failed to score in double-digits in only seven of 29 games while nursing a late-season injury. A 3-point specialist, Tomko is 10th in UNCW history in scoring.
  • Ahmad Grant: Tomko will be joined in the backcourt by senior guard Grant, who posted 8.1 points per game last season. After transferring from Olney Central Junior College, Grant caught fire towards the end of the season, putting up at least 10 points in six of the final seven games of the season.

What to expect: Lots of question marks surround the Seahawks this season with a new coach and plenty of new faces – including two freshmen (Donte Morales and Tanner Milson) and two transfers (Matthew Wallace, from Cal State-Northridge/Chaffey Community College, and Antoine Allen, from Miami). Peterson and his staff will have their hands full as they try to rectify the program. Tomko will be asked to play a balanced game, but the temptation will be for him to live behind the 3-point line to try and keep his team in games from deep. A bottom three finish is likely as transition takes shape in Wilmington.
