The Northeastern men’s hockey team opened the new calendar year with back-to-back wins against two Massachusetts state schools, beating UMass 5-3 in Amherst on Friday night and then returning home to knock off UMass-Lowell 3-1.
Friday night, the Huskies scored three goals in 38 seconds to take the lead after going down 3-1 in the second period. Penalties were taken by both Marc Concannon and Michael Lecomte to give the Huskies a 5 on 3 advantage and NU made the most of it.
Freshman Brodie Reid blasted a slapshot by UMass goaltender Paul Dainton to make it 3-2. Twenty-four seconds later, still on the man-advantage, the Huskies tied the game when Wade MacLeod buried a pass from Tyler McNeely for his team leading seventh goal of the season.
To complete the onslaught, Steve Quailer put one past Dainton 14 seconds after MacLeod to give the Huskies the lead and they never looked back. Freshman Rob Dongara added an empty net goal to seal the deal for NU.
The next night Clay Witt made his first Hockey East start of the season and only surrendered one goal to get his first collegiate win against the Riverhawks.
Reid scored his second goal in as many nights to give NU the 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. Early in the second, Lowell tied the game on a controversial goal by Riley Wetmore. After review, the officials declared the play a goal and the game went into the third period knotted at 1-1.
Just 19 seconds into the final frame, MacLeod put his eighth of the season past goaltender Marc Boulanger to put NU back in front. The Huskies played good defense and Witt, who finished with 23 saves, didn’t allow any other shots to get past him.
This time, it was McNeely who finished the game off with the empty netter, giving the Huskies their first 4-point weekend of the season.
NU is now in 6th place in Hockey East with 5-6-3 record good for 13 points. They will welcome the Vermont Catamounts to Matthews Arena next weekend for a two-game series. Both games can be heard live on WRBB with pre-game starting at 6:45 both on Friday and Saturday night.
