Pollercoaster: Week 8

December 1st, 2010

We’ve had to skip quite a few weeks because, well, the teams we cover haven’t been getting any votes. But with Thanksgiving break over, Northeastern women’s hockey now finds itself in the top 10 in both the USCHO and USA Today polls. The Huskies are unbeaten in 5 out of their last 6 games, the only loss coming to Providence College.

Welcome back to the pollercoaster!

February 15th, 2010

pollercoaster4It’s been a while, and it’s good to be back. While men’s basketball has been stuck in the middle of the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25 poll, Northeastern hockey hasn’t seen the pollercoaster since this feature ran on November 11th. A lot has happened since then. At that point hockey was on the highest of highs, defeating Boston University at home. The team has experienced rock bottom, a 9-2 drubbing in Burlington, Vermont. Since that blowout, the Huskies are 6-1. Add to that wins against teams under consideration (Lowell, UMass, Vermont), and NU once again becomes a team represented in the most recent USCHO poll.

So, how does Northeastern stand in those polls? Read more…

Off The Wires: We can’t recap a whole week…

January 20th, 2010

… but we can give you some much-needed Off The Wires action! On the eve of Northeastern’s game against Towson, let’s present some links (something we’ve been neglecting to do):

>>> First, Bob Ryan surveys the local college hoops scene and says you should get out to Matthews Arena to see a game. [Boston Globe]

>>> Darren Costa posts an interview with Brad Thiessen. [Life Being Husky]

>>> Former Rutgers basketball player Christine Huber has transferred to Northeastern. [Newark Star Ledger]

>>> Nancy Marrapese-Burrell says it all in her headline for this game story – last night’s win against Providence will definitely sit well with the team. [Boston Globe]

>>> Mike Litos picks Northeastern as 8-point favorites over Towson. [CAA Hoops]

>>> Finally, the pollercoaster might not be making much news to Huskies fans, but think about this: NU is now 27th in the latest hockey RPI and is one win away from a .500 overall record this season. [USCHO]

Yes, time to break out the Dramamine. This time of year, when every conference has started play, we’re bound to be in for a wild ride on the ‘ol pollercoaster. If anything, we have more questions than answers now, and there are some teams that have every right to feel a bit queasy. Read more…

Pollercoaster: Basketball, women’s hockey join the fun

November 2nd, 2009

pollercoaster3It’s week 6 of following the hockey polls, with Northeastern barely clinging onto life in the USCHO rankings, and still absent from USA Today’s list. Without games to play, the Huskies had nowhere to go. However, women’s hockey swept Vermont over the weekend, improving to 7-1-1 and being recognized by the voters for their efforts.

Here’s how the hockey polls shake out:

  • USCHO.com Men’s: Northeastern receiving votes, unofficially 26th. Four Hockey East teams squeak into the top 16.
  • USA Today Men’s: Huskies not present, but again four Hockey East teams appear in the top 16.
  • USCHO.com Women’s: NU appears for the first time this season, fresh off a weekend sweep of the Vermont Catamounts. Three Hockey East teams are in the top 10.
  • USA Today Women’s: Northeastern garners some votes, sitting in 12th unofficially.

Meanwhile, we’ll be keeping track of various mid-major basketball polls during the season. The first one is out, from collegeinsider.com – Northeastern ranks 13th, behind fellow CAA teams ODU (6), VCU (11), and GMU (12).

Off The Wires Thursday: Playoffs, polls, and pundits

October 29th, 2009

>>> First, the folks at Northeastern athletics have done a good job going over the playoff scenarios for volleyball, field hockey, and men’s/women’s soccer. [Huskies Insider]

>>> Speaking of soccer, Marvin Pave writes that there’s very MetroWest feel to the men’s soccer team. [Boston Globe West]

>>> Mike Litos strongly believes that Bill Coen deserves a raise and a contract extension, and tells you why. [CAA Hoops]

>>> Jerry Beach has an interesting synthesis of CAA basketball predictions made thus far, compiling them all into one master poll. [Defiantly Dutch]

>>> Patrick McHugh writes about an elated football team that broke its 13-game long winless streak on Saturday. [Huntington News]

>>> While not officially ranked, NU did jump to “12th” in USA Today’s women’s hockey poll. [Huntington News]

With hockey off for the weekend and football on the road, head out to Parsons Field and scream your face off at the women’s soccer game. Of course, if you can’t get to the game, we’ll have it for you live here on WRBB.

Pollercoaster: No soup for you

October 26th, 2009

pollercoaster2This poll was easy enough to analyze from the Northeastern perspective: Two losses translate to a drop in the polls, unofficially to 29th in the USCHO.com poll and completely out of the USA Today poll.

On to the lists we go. Read more…
