ODU 49, NU 34: Monarchs Sink Huskies In Low Scoring Affair

January 6th, 2011

The Huskies were definitely missing senior captain Chaisson Allen and his 16 points per game Wednesday when they mustered only 34 points in a 49-34 loss to the Old Dominion Monarchs.

After being down 26-16 at halftime, NU hung with ODU for the first part of the second half but once the Monarchs got into a rhythm offensively, the Huskies found themselves trailing by double-digits. The Huskies’ total was the lowest ever at the Ted Constant Convocation Center and the game was the lowest-scoring in CAA history.

“It was a rough outing for us tonight,” said Northeastern head coach Bill Coen. “We showed signs of fatigue even in the first half and I thought ODU’s defensive pressure really made us work extremely hard for every look on the offensive end.”

Jon Lee led NU with 11 points and was the only Husky in double figures. Frank Hassell led Old Dominon with 16 points, shooting a perfect 7-7 from the floor. Trian Iliadis also didn’t miss a shot, going 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from 3-point distance for 11 points.

The Monarchs scored 30 of their 49 points from inside the paint and also had 22 points off turnovers, of which NU had 15.

“In the first half I thought they got way too many easy baskets off our zone in the paint,” Coen said. “When we played man I thought we got a little more stingy but we lost track of shooters off screens.”

The Huskies did take the lead early on in the first half when Joel Smith scored six points in the first six minutes of play. Lee hit a jumper with 11:27 to play in the first half to put NU on top 12-8. Northeastern then proceeded to go scoreless until the teams were 55 seconds from halftime, when Smith hit a fast-break layup. In total, the drought spanned 10:28.

In the second half, the offensive struggles continued for NU and it was the timely shooting from Iliadis that eventually sealed Northeastern’s fate. Iliadis made all three of his shots from downtown in the second half and the last two were on consecutive possessions.

Sophomore forward Dinko Marshavelski, who scored a career-high 23 points for NU on Monday at James Madison, was held to 2-6 from the field and only totaled 4 points while Ryan Pierson, who had 17 on Monday, only managed 2 points on a basket that came in the second half.

“We couldn’t get them the ball,”Coen said. “The ball pressure of Old Dominion troubled our guards so we couldn’t deliver the ball to them. We really didn’t get any balls in the paint and you’ve got to give credit to their defense. They hawked the ball all night long, and that ball pressure was very disruptive in our offense, it disrupted our timing and the quality of our looks.”

With a 35-26 edge on the glass, the Monarchs continued their dominance on the boards as they have out-rebounded each team they have faced so far this season.

With the win, Monarchs head coach Blaine Taylor became Old Dominion’s all-time winningest men’s coach, securing his 199th victory tonight.

The next game for the Huskies will be Saturday afternoon when they return to Matthews Arena for the first time in a month to face the Hofstra Pride at noon. WRBB will have full coverage of the game starting with pre-game at 11:45 am.

CAA Media Day Notebook

October 22nd, 2010

We’ve had some time to digest what we heard at media day [read: it's been a busy couple of days, but we're finally getting to post our stuff], so here’s some of the highlights from our interviews in writing, along with the full audio clips. We were able to catch up with 10 of the 12 coaches, missing Towson’s Pat Kennedy and UNC-Wilmington’s Buzz Peterson.

  • Monte Ross: Jawan Carter needs to be a leader and make sure that everybody else on the team has the same competitiveness that he has. Brian Johnson, who tore his meniscus on Sunday, will only be out for four weeks. The fact that it’s the same knee he tore last year should not be a factor as the season continues. Devon Saddler and Jamelle Hagins should be impact freshmen. Key quote: “Playing time is determined in practice every single day.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Bruiser Flint: Trip to Turkey was good for chemistry, helped with mental toughness which was a problem last year. Taking some extra precautions to take Chris Fouch healthy, he’s been working on getting his body stronger. Doesn’t expect Bill Coen to give up a home game for special events away from Matthews Arena very often, but Drexel is looking forward to the game at the TD Garden. Key quote: “You can’t worry about what happened in the past. You gotta look forward.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Jim Larranaga: Lots of inexperience and mistakes lead to last-second losses in 2009-10 (five games on last possession) – don’t blame Cam Long. This year, Cam doesn’t have to carry the load – has four other starters back. Trip to Italy was great for team chemistry. Balance is key – in lives and on court. Lots of injuries in the first couple days of practice – only 8 healthy players for third day, though most were minor injuries. Cornelius, Long, Hancock and Allen will play point-guard-by-committee until someone emerges as primary. Very confident in top 6 (Morrison, Pearson, Long, Hancock, Cornelius, Tate), other positions are question marks. Key quote: “If you ask me, VCU and ODU are two of my favorite places to go because the crowds are into it; there seems to be a lot at stake.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Rod Barnes: Different type of a team from last year; more of a team concept this year – Jihad Ali could score 15-16 points, but there will be lots of guys around 8-9. He talked quite a bit about Ali, so expect big things from him this year. Trip to Bahamas was “huge” to gain some experience and develop team chemistry. Key quote: “I think Jihad Ali is gonna have a big year.” - based on how much he said that, it’s worth repeating here.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Mo Cassara: Charles Jenkins is “driven, determined, he works as hard as any kid I’ve ever been around.” Is improving pretty much everything (ballhandling, shooting, defense). Greg Washington will be improving his offensive game. Nat Lester’s status is still in question. Loss of football will create a different vibe for basketball on campus. Key quote: “I do embrace [social media]. I love it. I do talk to my team…about how to use that. I think it’s a big part of the society that we live in today.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Matt Brady: Andrey Semenov hasn’t practiced yet (as of Tuesday) after banging his head in practice – not a concussion, but the team is treating it as one. Heightened expectation within team after underachievement last year – both because of injury and lack of ability to finish games. Defense is the only focus. Key quote: “In order to challenge for a league championship at this level, in the CAA, you’ve gotta be one of the better defensive teams in the league.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Bill Coen: Complete confidence in Chase Allen’s ability to lead without Matt Janning, Nkem Ojougboh and Manny Adako. Too early to say who’s the starting center, but the sophomore class is important (perhaps a clue?). “[The sophomore class] can’t play as sophomores. They have to play as juniors and seniors.” Will mix it up between flex and running – feels pretty good with ball in Chase’s hands either fast or slow. Rivalry with Boston University means a lot to both schools. Continuity and connection with players is big with bringing Brian McDonald back – “set the gold standard for work ethic [last year].” Key quote: “I can’t thank the student body enough. They really made Matthews a special venue to see a college basketball game. This year, I think it’s gonna be even better…they’re worth points on the scoreboard…”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Blaine Taylor: He likes having more people to talk to at media day now compared to 10 years ago (that’s what he’s talking about at the beginning of the audio clip). He’s a “program director” – losing one top player won’t hurt the team too much. Plenty of other players will be able to fill the void left by Gerald Lee, not just one person. Despite top-ranked defense last year, there’s room for improvement. Old Dominion is at a point where BCS schools like Georgetown, Missouri, etc. will play them because losing to ODU doesn’t hurt and winning really helps. Key quote: “What I tell our guys is if you all are gonna try to be the player of the week, then we ain’t gonna be the team of the week.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Shaka Smart: Jamie Skeen will benefit from departure of Larry Sanders, since he’ll be a focal point for a lot of what VCU does. Toby Veal will make the biggest impact of all newcomers (since he’s a junior college transfer). Bradford Burgess has all-CAA potential (“this list” that Coach Smart refers to is the all-conference team list). Coaches are not at all involved in decision-making process for location of CAA tournament. There are as many as 5-6 teams that could win the conference. Key quote: “In a lot of ways, [Joey Rodriguez] was our most valuable player last year and I think he can be significantly better this year.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Tony Shaver: Returning players are the key, not highly-touted freshman class. Kendrix Brown is ready to go, could surprise people with his efficiency. Guarantee games are a part of the future for budgetary reasons, but Coach Shaver looks forward to having the problem of not being able to schedule BCS schools. Key quote: “The important thing for Quinn McDowell is to be Quinn McDowell and not do more than he’s capable of.”

CAA Team Previews: Old Dominion Monarchs

October 12th, 2010

We’re late on this one, but we’ll try and get back on track with another preview later this week. For now, here’s a look at the Old Dominion Monarchs.

2009-2010 Recap: The Monarchs crowned themselves kings of the league last year, winning both the regular season title and the CAA Tournament with a victory over William & Mary in the championship game. In case that wasn’t enough, they went on to defeat Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Baylor in the round of 32. Apart from a three-game skid in late November-early December during which Old Dominion lost to Missouri, Mississippi State, and Richmond, the team never lost back-to-back games. An eight game win streak in January (snapped by a loss at Northeastern) propelled them to a 29-7 overall record including a perfect 15-0 mark in Norfolk (extending their home streak to 23 games). As a team, the Monarchs were 6th in the nation in scoring defense at 57.5 points against per game.

Key Losses:

  • Gerald Lee: ODU’s leading scorer, at 14.4 points per game on 54% shooting, graduated in May. This year, he’s playing with Snaidero, a professional team in Italy. Some may say that his style of play doesn’t fit the NBA, but it certainly fit for Old Dominion as he was a force anytime he was on the court. He played in more games than any other player in Old Dominion history, and sits at 11th on the all-time leading scorers’ list. He was named to the first team all-CAA as well as tournament MVP and was one of 20 college seniors invited to play at the Reese’s College All-Star Game at Lucas Oil Stadium before the Final Four.
  • Marsharee Neely: Not exactly a major loss, but the only other loss Old Dominion had. Another graduate, Neely appeared in 35 contests and had 10 starts in 2009-10. He averaged 5.5 points and just shy of 3 rebounds per game. Neely participated in the State Farm College Slam Dunk Championship, broadcast by ESPN, on April 1 in Indiana.

Key Returns:

  • Frank Hassell: Second in scoring behind Lee at 9.2/game (also on 54% shooting), Hassell will lead this year’s squad. At 6’8 and 245lbs., Hassell could often be found around the glass as he was the team’s leading rebounder (6.7/game) and shot blocker (33). With Lee gone, expect those numbers to improve this season.
  • Ben Finney: Named All-CAA third team, Finney was another strong presence on the floor. He appeared in all 36 games for Old Dominion, starting 35 of them. Finney played a balanced game, averaging 8.8 points and 5.8 rebounds while being credited with 11 blocked shots, 45 steals, and 89 assists.
  • Kent Bazemore: Yet another Monarch poised for a big year, Bazemore is a versatile player with the ability to play either guard or forward. His strength is finding the open man, as he led the team with 121 assists (barely edging out Darius James, who had 120). He also led in steals with 67 (tied with VCU’s Joey Rodriguez for the CAA lead – 1.9/game), swatted away 17 shots, and turned in a very nice 8.4 PPG and 4.8 RPG. Bazemore was a CAA all-defensive team honoree. His biggest weakness is free throw shooting, as he converted just 54 of his 111 attempts (48.6%).

What to expect: I could list just about every player in the key returns section, but I’ll save you the reading time. Of the 11 players on the roster (not including Josh Hicks or Anton Larsen, who both redshirted), all 11 appeared in at least 29 games. Coach Blaine Taylor (and his wonderful mustache) spreads playing time among everybody – and it works. His players weren’t filling up the conference stat leader charts or taking up all the space on the all-conference teams (Lee and Finney being the only ones to make an appearance in the first-, second-, or third teams), but they put their skills together and found ways to win. A lot. Look for guys like Darius James, Trian Iliadis, and Nick Wright to see expanded roles and expect some decent work from freshmen Dimitri Batten and Richard Ross. Old Dominion has a very good chance at repeating this season, and it would be a pretty big surprise if they weren’t picked as the top team in the league by the coaches’ preseason poll (which will be released next Tuesday at CAA Media Day).
