Off The Wires: Cronin’s frustration with Reid, McNeely to the Islanders, Coach L to South Beach

April 22nd, 2011

>>> Jason Mastrodonato wrote a great story yesterday on Greg Cronin’s reactions to Brodie Reid’s signing with the San Jose Sharks. Cronin didn’t pull any punches, saying bluntly that he did not feel Reid was ready to make the leap to the professional ranks. Cronin’s comments come after over three years of watching Reid’s development from junior hockey all the way to Northeastern this past season:

“I think it’s a bunch of garbage,” Cronin said. “He had about nine points even strength in 37 games and he was invisible the first half of the year. The only visibility he had was on the power play. I told him he should try and find somebody he can trust and the coaching staff [at Northeastern], he can use us as barometers of where he fits. I talked to San Jose [director of scouting] Tim Burke and I told him I thought his assessment of Brodie was inaccurate.”

As for Reid, his comments echoed statements made earlier in the week, that the Sharks came calling with a big contract offer, and it was too good to pass up.

>>> Tyler McNeely signed a one-year two-way (AHL/NHL) deal with the New York Islanders, and the move is getting a lot of praise on the Island. Words like “promising newcomer,” “quality player” have been used, and it will be interesting to see how far McNeely goes. Wade Macleod is signed to a one-year contract with Springfield (Columbus AHL affiliate).

>>> There’s speculation today that George Mason head coach Jim Larranaga may head to the University of Miami to take their vacancy. Larranaga’s move would be a surprise given his rejection of his alma mater Providence just three years ago, as well as the high-profile courting of VCU head coach Shaka Smart to lucrative positions around the nation. The Miami Herald’s Michelle Kaufman reports that the two sides are close to a deal:

George Mason athletic director Tom O’Connor granted Larranaga permission to speak to UM officials, according to the school’s spokeswoman, Maureen Nasser, and sources said the two sides were close to reaching a deal on Thursday night. He is scheduled to fly to Miami Friday to meet with UM president Donna Shalala and other school officials. Pending their approval, he will likely be hired.

GMU 86, NU 60: Losing streak snowballs

January 13th, 2011

BOSTON — As heavy snow fell on Boston and locals needed shovels to dig themselves clear of the inclement weather, the men’s basketball team was in the midst of trying to dig itself clear of an inclement stretch.

An 86-60 loss to visiting George Mason last night dropped the Huskies to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The loss was Northeastern’s sixth consecutive defeat.

“We’re not in a good spot right now – we’re not playing very good basketball. We’re not playing team basketball,” head coach Bill Coen said. “We have to get back to doing that and playing fundamental basketball.”

The Patriots, who had not won at Matthews Arena since 2006, had little difficulty figuring out the Huskies’ defense and enjoyed its largest scoring output of the season. Junior Ryan Pearson led all scorers with 24 points while senior Cam Long added 20 points to lead the visitors in scoring.

Mason, which led by as many as 32 points in the second half, jumped out to an early lead and entered halftime comfortably ahead by 17 points.

“I just thought we got beat by a better basketball team tonight,” Coen said. “They came right out and jumped on us right from the get go.”

NU’s defense allowed the Patriots to shoot 67.3 percent from the floor, much higher than its season average of 47.7 percent.

Sophomore guards Joel Smith and Jon Lee led the Huskies with 16 points apiece, while freshman guard Alex Harris added 12 points.

The Huskies travel to Richmond, Va., Saturday to take on Virginia Commonwealth University. Tip-off inside the Siegel Center is scheduled for noon.

CAA Media Day Notebook

October 22nd, 2010

We’ve had some time to digest what we heard at media day [read: it's been a busy couple of days, but we're finally getting to post our stuff], so here’s some of the highlights from our interviews in writing, along with the full audio clips. We were able to catch up with 10 of the 12 coaches, missing Towson’s Pat Kennedy and UNC-Wilmington’s Buzz Peterson.

  • Monte Ross: Jawan Carter needs to be a leader and make sure that everybody else on the team has the same competitiveness that he has. Brian Johnson, who tore his meniscus on Sunday, will only be out for four weeks. The fact that it’s the same knee he tore last year should not be a factor as the season continues. Devon Saddler and Jamelle Hagins should be impact freshmen. Key quote: “Playing time is determined in practice every single day.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Bruiser Flint: Trip to Turkey was good for chemistry, helped with mental toughness which was a problem last year. Taking some extra precautions to take Chris Fouch healthy, he’s been working on getting his body stronger. Doesn’t expect Bill Coen to give up a home game for special events away from Matthews Arena very often, but Drexel is looking forward to the game at the TD Garden. Key quote: “You can’t worry about what happened in the past. You gotta look forward.”

  • Jim Larranaga: Lots of inexperience and mistakes lead to last-second losses in 2009-10 (five games on last possession) – don’t blame Cam Long. This year, Cam doesn’t have to carry the load – has four other starters back. Trip to Italy was great for team chemistry. Balance is key – in lives and on court. Lots of injuries in the first couple days of practice – only 8 healthy players for third day, though most were minor injuries. Cornelius, Long, Hancock and Allen will play point-guard-by-committee until someone emerges as primary. Very confident in top 6 (Morrison, Pearson, Long, Hancock, Cornelius, Tate), other positions are question marks. Key quote: “If you ask me, VCU and ODU are two of my favorite places to go because the crowds are into it; there seems to be a lot at stake.”

  • Rod Barnes: Different type of a team from last year; more of a team concept this year – Jihad Ali could score 15-16 points, but there will be lots of guys around 8-9. He talked quite a bit about Ali, so expect big things from him this year. Trip to Bahamas was “huge” to gain some experience and develop team chemistry. Key quote: “I think Jihad Ali is gonna have a big year.” - based on how much he said that, it’s worth repeating here.

  • Mo Cassara: Charles Jenkins is “driven, determined, he works as hard as any kid I’ve ever been around.” Is improving pretty much everything (ballhandling, shooting, defense). Greg Washington will be improving his offensive game. Nat Lester’s status is still in question. Loss of football will create a different vibe for basketball on campus. Key quote: “I do embrace [social media]. I love it. I do talk to my team…about how to use that. I think it’s a big part of the society that we live in today.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Matt Brady: Andrey Semenov hasn’t practiced yet (as of Tuesday) after banging his head in practice – not a concussion, but the team is treating it as one. Heightened expectation within team after underachievement last year – both because of injury and lack of ability to finish games. Defense is the only focus. Key quote: “In order to challenge for a league championship at this level, in the CAA, you’ve gotta be one of the better defensive teams in the league.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Bill Coen: Complete confidence in Chase Allen’s ability to lead without Matt Janning, Nkem Ojougboh and Manny Adako. Too early to say who’s the starting center, but the sophomore class is important (perhaps a clue?). “[The sophomore class] can’t play as sophomores. They have to play as juniors and seniors.” Will mix it up between flex and running – feels pretty good with ball in Chase’s hands either fast or slow. Rivalry with Boston University means a lot to both schools. Continuity and connection with players is big with bringing Brian McDonald back – “set the gold standard for work ethic [last year].” Key quote: “I can’t thank the student body enough. They really made Matthews a special venue to see a college basketball game. This year, I think it’s gonna be even better…they’re worth points on the scoreboard…”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Blaine Taylor: He likes having more people to talk to at media day now compared to 10 years ago (that’s what he’s talking about at the beginning of the audio clip). He’s a “program director” – losing one top player won’t hurt the team too much. Plenty of other players will be able to fill the void left by Gerald Lee, not just one person. Despite top-ranked defense last year, there’s room for improvement. Old Dominion is at a point where BCS schools like Georgetown, Missouri, etc. will play them because losing to ODU doesn’t hurt and winning really helps. Key quote: “What I tell our guys is if you all are gonna try to be the player of the week, then we ain’t gonna be the team of the week.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Shaka Smart: Jamie Skeen will benefit from departure of Larry Sanders, since he’ll be a focal point for a lot of what VCU does. Toby Veal will make the biggest impact of all newcomers (since he’s a junior college transfer). Bradford Burgess has all-CAA potential (“this list” that Coach Smart refers to is the all-conference team list). Coaches are not at all involved in decision-making process for location of CAA tournament. There are as many as 5-6 teams that could win the conference. Key quote: “In a lot of ways, [Joey Rodriguez] was our most valuable player last year and I think he can be significantly better this year.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • Tony Shaver: Returning players are the key, not highly-touted freshman class. Kendrix Brown is ready to go, could surprise people with his efficiency. Guarantee games are a part of the future for budgetary reasons, but Coach Shaver looks forward to having the problem of not being able to schedule BCS schools. Key quote: “The important thing for Quinn McDowell is to be Quinn McDowell and not do more than he’s capable of.”

CAA Team Preview: George Mason Patriots

September 1st, 2010

The George Mason Patriots are up next in our weekly series previewing all twelve CAA basketball teams.

2009-10 Recap: The Patriots finished the season fourth in the CAA with a conference record of 12-6 and an overall record of 17-15. After a stellar January, when they went 9-1 including a 7-game winning streak, the Patriots were tied for the CAA lead but faltered in February – going just 2-6 (though one of those losses was a non-conference BracketBusters game). George Mason still had a chance to leapfrog Northeastern and take over the third seed in the last regular season matchup (against the Huskies), but a very late foul cost them. Fourth was still good enough to earn a first-round bye, but the Patriots were bounced from the conference tournament by VCU in the quarterfinals. Despite that loss, the team was still selected to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT),where they dropped a close one to Fairfield in overtime. A balanced game was key to Mason’s success, as there were no particular stat categories in which the Patriots excelled. In fact, the highest they ranked in any major category was fourth (3-point percentage, 34.3%).

Key Losses: While you read this section of the preview, you may hear crickets chirping in the background. Kevin Foster, who transferred to the College of Central Florida (not University), and Louis Birdsong, who graduated, are the only two end-of-season losses (Jimmy Nolan left in January, but had only played in one game and didn’t contribute much). Foster gave the team 4.5 points per game in the 26 contests he participated in, and also grabbed 3.2 rebounds per game and swatted away 15 total shots. He had some very good games, but can be replaced. After strong sophomore and junior campaigns, Birdsong wasn’t a major factor on the scoresheet in 2009-10, putting up just 2.6 points and bringing down 2 rebounds per game. His leadership will be missed, however.

Key Returns:

  • Cam Long: It would be easy to say that Long is the most important player to watch on this team. A second-team All-CAA honoree last season, Long will be one of only two seniors on the team (Isaiah Tate being the other) and will be expected to lead this team. He led the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and had six 20+ point performances. He also led the team with 97 assists and 39 steals. However, as important as he will be, Long has plenty of help coming back on this team – including all four of the other starters from last year’s squad.
  • Ryan Pearson: Another big stat leader, the junior led the team in rebounds (6.4/game) and was second, just behind Long, in scoring at 11.9 points per contest. He was also 2nd in steals, with 34, and 6th in the CAA in field goal percentage at 45.7%.
  • Andre Cornelius: The Patriots’ biggest deep threat, Cornelius led the conference in three-point shooing percentage (43.3%).  He’ll be looking to pick up where he left off last year, with career highs in points (28), rebounds (9), steals (4), field goals (9), 3-point field goals (6), and minutes (39) against Fairfield in the CIT.
  • Mike Morrison: The team’s second-leading rebounder (5.9/game) and best shot blocker, with 49 in 2009-10, Morrison posted four double-doubles last season.
  • Isaiah Tate: The 5th starter from last season, Tate is another three-point shooter with excellent range and has greatly improved defensively in his three years at Mason. He held UNCW’s Chad Tomko, who, at the time, had a CAA-leading 19-game streak with double-digit scoring, to four points.
  • Luke Hancock: Even though he only started five games last year, he was named to the All-Rookie team. He provides a healthy balance across many stat categories: scoring (7.7/game), rebounding (3.5/game), assists (96 – second on the team), and steals (26).

What to expect: George Mason is one of the deepest and most experienced teams in the CAA - even before the new recruits come in. Bryon Allen was ESPN’s 43rd ranked point guard of the 2010 recruiting class, and was recruited by Villanova, UConn, and Providence, among others. As more of a pure point guard than either Long or Cornelius (who are more well-suited for the shooting guard position), Allen could eat into some of their minutes and ball-handling duties. Jonathan Arledge, a McDonald’s All-American nominee, was ranked 35th among centers and drew interest from plenty of big-name schools including Georgetown, Temple, Virginia, USC, and more. Look for a good share of minutes going his way as well. The players aren’t at the top of the all-conference stat leader lists, but each one brings his own talents to the floor and they put it all together as a team should. The Patriots also took a trip to Italy this summer, where they played four games and had plenty of time for bonding. Barring catastrophe, they will not be playing Friday night basketball in Richmond this March, as they’ll be near the top of the standings.
