’10-’11 Flashback: NU topples BU in Hockey East playoffs

August 24th, 2011

Finishing our series of complete game broadcasts from the 2010-2011 season, we end on a high note, with perhaps one of the most important wins in the past two decades. The Huskies achieved the unfathomable: going on the road to face Boston University in a 3-game quarterfinal playoff series, and defeating the Terriers in dramatic fashion. It put the Huskies in the Hockey East semifinal round for the second time in three years and added yet another wrinkle in Northeastern’s nasty rivalry with BU.

From Jason Mastrodonato’s game recap in the Huntington News:

After each of the three games last weekend, the same theme started to emerge:  The team that wanted it more – and got a little bit of luck – seemed to come through on the victorious end each time.

“I think over the years, we played so many close games that came down to the wire and it just kind of seemed like maybe [BU] got the bounce,” said senior forward Steve Silva, who had three goals in the series. “But I think now the last couple of games we’ve gotten the bounces and I think we just had to get over that hump of finally beating them.”

’10-’11 Flashback: Women’s hockey takes down BU, advances to Hockey East final

August 8th, 2011

Despite a second-half slide that cost them home ice in the playoffs, Northeastern women’s hockey surged in the post-season. First, the Huskies got a big win against UConn on the road, then, in this complete game broadcast, they took down then No. 4 ranked Boston University at Walter Brown Arena, advancing to the Hockey East championship game for the first time.

From Northeastern’s game recap:

It took just 1:13 of the third frame for Northeastern to regain the lead for good. Freshman forward Katie MacSorley carried the puck in the Terrier zone and, after finding open space between the hash marks, she fired a shot that Sperry saved. The puck popped up in the air, and Santostefano was there to bat it home for the 3-2 lead. It was the fifth goal of the season for Santostefano and the sixth assist of the season for MacSorley.

The Terriers brought plenty of pressure to try and tie the game, but Schelling stood tall each time she was tested. She made the save of the game on a fellow Olympian, as Schelling, a Swiss Olympian, made a glove save to rob Canadian Olympian Marie-Philip Poulin on the doorstep. It was one of 15 saves in the third period for Schelling.

July 25th, 2011

On a weekend when then-head coach Greg Cronin was suspended by Northeastern for recruiting violations, Northeastern managed to get a bit of Beanpot revenge, defeating unanimous No. 1 Boston College and securing a playoff spot in the process. The game was an instant classic, with Matthews Arena filled to capacity and a thrilling a cap to a wild week of Huskies hockey.

From Jason Mastrodonato’s game recap for the Huntington News:

The men’s hockey team busted through top-ranked Boston College Saturday night, tightening up on defense in a 2-1 victory to clinch a playoff spot in front of a capacity crowd of 4,666 at Matthews Arena.

“Extremely gutsy effort,” said interim head coach Sebastien Laplante, filling in for head coach Greg Cronin, who was suspended by the university along with assistant Albie O’Connell.

“We’re extremely proud of them for the focus and the poise they played with. The resiliency was amazing all week long – from the Beanpot to last night coming back from all these goals down is an amazing accomplishment.”

’10-’11 Flashback: Beanpot Championship Game

July 12th, 2011

It may have been a loss, but it was one of the most thrilling Beanpot title games in recent memory, if not for the stellar play of both teams, but the fact that in the 13 goals scored, neither team took the lead by more than one at any given time. At exactly six minutes into overtime, Jimmy Hayes got the game winner, ruining Northeastern’s hopes of ending their 23-year Beanpot drought.

From Jared Shafran’s game recap:

“I’ve been in a lot of big games,” head coach Greg Cronin said. “And that game had more drama and back-and-forth character from both teams [than any other]. And I said to myself after the third period, ‘It’s a shame someone’s going to lose this.’ If someone came in and bought tickets, they got every penny’s worth of their money.”
