NU 82, BU 74 (OT): Opening the season in a ‘big’ way

November 13th, 2011

What happened?

It was a back-and-forth game that saw 12 ties and 14 lead changes, many in the fast-paced, high-energy first half. The crowds for both teams and the players fed off of each other’s energy, creating a thrilling environment to start off the basketball season.

Kauri Black put the Huskies on the board first with a layup only 13 seconds into the game, then an Alwayne Bigby layup made it 4-0 to match what would be the team’s largest lead of the first half. Boston University would later go on an 11-0 run to take a 7-point advantage with 6:28 to go in the first half, the Terriers’ largest lead of the game. Towards the end of the period, Joel Smith broke the 7th tie of the game with a Joel Smith jumper, then the teams traded blocked shots in the final minute. The half came to a close with D.J. Irving driving to the basket, but he lost control of the ball and neither team picked it up in time to attempt a shot before the buzzer.

Northeastern led for most of the 2nd half, taking an 11-point lead with 4:53 left to go in regulation. The Terriers got going with a D.J. Irving layup at 4:01 to spark a 12-0 run. Matt Griffin’s 3-pointer gave BU a 1-point lead with 1:05 on the clock before Joel Smith nailed a pair of free throws to put NU up 64-63. Alwayne Bigby sent Darryl Partin to the line and Partin hit the first of his free throws but missed the second. Jon Lee then had an opportunity at the line but missed with 10 seconds to go. He made up for it with a block on the other end, swatting away a D.J. Irving attempt for three with 2 seconds remaining that would have given the Terriers the victory.

In overtime, Boston University had a pair of 3-point leads, last as late as 1:58 before Kashief Edwards nailed a pair of free throws to open up a 12-2 run that closed the game. Of Joel Smith’s 20 points, 6 game in the extra 5 minutes including 4 free throws in the last 11 seconds.

Player of the Game:

Joel Smith led the Huskies in both scoring (20) and rebounding (12). He also had 5 assists, 2nd on the team behind Jon Lee’s 6, and a mean block on Patrick Hazel in the 2nd half. He didn’t find the basket until he hit his first two of ten free throws (he went 10-10 from the line on the game) with 5:34 left in the first half, but his game took off from there. His on-court leadership was evident even before that, taking charge of the team from the opening tip. He played 43 of the game’s 45 minutes.

Reggie Spencer also deserves a mention, notching a double-double in his first collegiate game – the first double-double in a Northeastern debut since Chaisson Allen in 2007 (11 points, 10 rebounds). He was on the court for big minutes, especially in the second half. With Kauri Black fouled out, Spencer filled in some critical minutes with 16 points and 10 boards, leading the team with 2 blocks before he was also disqualified.

The Takeaway:

First, the play of the big men – especially the freshmen. Kauri Black was aggressive in the paint, posting a very respectable 12 points and 8 rebounds in 19 minutes of play before his 5th foul. The fouls were an issue for him all season long last year, and he has shown that his time on the court is too valuable for him to be sitting on the bench. Kashief Edwards was also a strong presence, despite posting only 8 points and 3 rebounds (2 offensive). Quincy Ford also had a solid game, and, like Spencer, was able to fill in minutes down the stretch when he was needed due to foul trouble. It’s been at least two seasons since Northeastern dominated the glass as well as they did, pulling down 52 rebounds to BU’s 32. Twice in 2010-11, the Huskies grabbed a total of 19 rebounds. On Friday, they had 19 offensive boards.

Ryan Pierson was the least effective big man on the floor for NU after being the best for most of last year. However, it was only the second time he has come off the bench, after he didn’t start against Furman last year due to sickness (and was not present for the game at George Mason due to family matters). It’s possible that he is more comfortable when he can get started right away, which wasn’t the case on Friday. Spencer, Black, Edwards and Ford all stepped in to make up for Pierson’s lost production.

Overall, it was a solid team effort with four players reaching double-digit scoring and four with at least eight rebounds. The team totaled 14 assists on 28 made field goals (62 shots, 45.2%), led by Jon Lee’s six. It’s the team culture and the ability to have everybody contribute that will win games for Northeastern this season. They’ll need to continue that, as well as the strong post play, to be competitive in every game – although they do have the pure talent to beat a number of teams.

Quotes of Note:

Bill Coen: “I have a guy on my staff named Antonio Reynolds-Dean…When he asked me what we needed, I said ‘find somebody that looks just like you, plays just like you, blocks shots like you. We were very, very fortunate to convince Reggie to come up to Boston all the way from Alabama.” Hear all of his comments:

Joe Jones: “I was not surprised by the glass. We went into the game knowing that was probably gonna tell the tale of who was gonna win the game – who controlled the backboard. Obviously, they did.” Hear his comments, along with those of senior Darryl Partin and sophomore D.J. Irving:

Wednesday Notebook: Field hockey surges, men’s hockey slips

October 26th, 2011

Here’s our rundown on what happened last weekend, what to look for this weekend, and what’s making news this week:

  • Field hockey sweeps but won’t catch ODU. Northeastern will not host the CAA field hockey tournament in two weeks, but through no fault of their own. Old Dominion improved to 7-0 in conference on a weekend when Northeastern swept their games at Hofstra on Friday and vs. Boston University on Sunday. Sunday’s game was the Huskies’ last home game, and (if they don’t drop any games this weekend) solidified their hopes of an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Crystal Poland scored her 25th goal of the season (which leads all of Division I), earning her CAA player of the week honors again (GoNU.com). Her scoring numbers are astonishing, especially when you consider that nobody else on the team even has more than 6. The Huskies finish the regular season this weekend with two road games.
  • It was a 0-point weekend for NU men’s hockey, with a loss on Friday to Merrimack (Boston Globe), then a heartbreaking loss in overtime to Boston College on Saturday (Boston Globe). More coverage of Saturday’s game from Boston Herald, College Hockey News, NCAA.com, Husky Hockey Blog
  • Holy Cross shocked BU over the weekend, and understandably, the team is savoring the win, writes Jennnifer Toland (Worcester Telegram). Former Huskies All-American Jason Guerriero was behind the Holy Cross bench for his first career game as an assistant coach, and was overjoyed:
First time on the bench ends with a HUGE win over Boston University 5-4. #unreal.
  • Speaking of BU, this column is making the rounds about whether Jack Parker should resign as head coach of the Terriers (Daily Free Press). There are a smattering of good points in the article: namely that Parker has seemingly failed to motivate his players of late. But honestly, the rest of this (as evidenced by the piles of laughter on Twitter – just do a bit of searching for it) is just garbage. We get that this writer was trying to be edgy and provocative, but honestly, the writer’s picture on the website coupled with the outlandish assertion that Parker has to resign is just comical.
  • Huskies legend Fernie Flaman will be inducted into the Mass Hockey Hall of Fame, a long-overdue recognition for Northeastern’s all-time winningest hockey coach (USCHO).
  • This weekend, men’s hockey is on the road in New Hampshire while the women travel up to Maine for the team’s first conference game. Both soccer teams are clinging on to CAA tournament berths, while field hockey is on the road, so the game you should be watching this weekend is Northeastern volleyball’s game against William & Mary on Friday night. The N Zone is having a costume contest, so it’s probably going to be a bit rowdy (and we wouldn’t have it any other way).

’10-’11 Flashback: NU topples BU in Hockey East playoffs

August 24th, 2011

Finishing our series of complete game broadcasts from the 2010-2011 season, we end on a high note, with perhaps one of the most important wins in the past two decades. The Huskies achieved the unfathomable: going on the road to face Boston University in a 3-game quarterfinal playoff series, and defeating the Terriers in dramatic fashion. It put the Huskies in the Hockey East semifinal round for the second time in three years and added yet another wrinkle in Northeastern’s nasty rivalry with BU.

From Jason Mastrodonato’s game recap in the Huntington News:

After each of the three games last weekend, the same theme started to emerge:  The team that wanted it more – and got a little bit of luck – seemed to come through on the victorious end each time.

“I think over the years, we played so many close games that came down to the wire and it just kind of seemed like maybe [BU] got the bounce,” said senior forward Steve Silva, who had three goals in the series. “But I think now the last couple of games we’ve gotten the bounces and I think we just had to get over that hump of finally beating them.”

Vermont added to non-conference schedule

Northeastern basketball continues to inch closer towards its full non-conference schedule, as the University of Vermont announced that the Huskies would visit the Catamounts on December 30th for a 4:30 p.m. game. It will be the first time the Huskies have faced an opponent from the America East (other than Boston University) since 2007.

The game is reportedly the first of a two game, two-year series between NU and UVM, with the return coming in the fall of 2012.

’10-’11 Flashback: Women’s hockey takes down BU, advances to Hockey East final

August 8th, 2011

Despite a second-half slide that cost them home ice in the playoffs, Northeastern women’s hockey surged in the post-season. First, the Huskies got a big win against UConn on the road, then, in this complete game broadcast, they took down then No. 4 ranked Boston University at Walter Brown Arena, advancing to the Hockey East championship game for the first time.

From Northeastern’s game recap:

It took just 1:13 of the third frame for Northeastern to regain the lead for good. Freshman forward Katie MacSorley carried the puck in the Terrier zone and, after finding open space between the hash marks, she fired a shot that Sperry saved. The puck popped up in the air, and Santostefano was there to bat it home for the 3-2 lead. It was the fifth goal of the season for Santostefano and the sixth assist of the season for MacSorley.

The Terriers brought plenty of pressure to try and tie the game, but Schelling stood tall each time she was tested. She made the save of the game on a fellow Olympian, as Schelling, a Swiss Olympian, made a glove save to rob Canadian Olympian Marie-Philip Poulin on the doorstep. It was one of 15 saves in the third period for Schelling.
