DURHAM, N.H. — Northeastern got off to a flying start, going ahead just 30 seconds into the contest with Robbie Vrolyk’s fourth goal in as many games. From there, it went downhill for the Huskies. Steve Moses potted his league-leading 20th goal of the year at 4:26 of the first period, sneaking a weak shot from the goal line under Rawlings’ right pad to level the score. With a shade under four minutes left in the first, UNH took the lead for good on an initially harmless play. Austin Block threw the disc towards the front of the net from below the goal line. The puck bounced off Rawlings’ skate and trickled over the line, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead on. UNH doubled its advantage late in the second period, with Block doubling his tally on a deflection in front of the net. Mike McLaughlin scored at 18:48 of the third to throw the Huskies a lifeline in the game, but the ensuing onslaught did not result in any goals, giving UNH a 3-2 win.

The Huskies score early in the game, but wobbly play for Chris Rawlings and stingy defense for UNH led to a 3-2 Wildcats victory at the Whittemore Center.

I have great news: remember that humiliating Beanpot loss on Monday night? Yeah, it didn’t count for any Hockey East points! Great — especially since the Huskies are done with Boston College (having gone 0-4 against the Eagles this year). So we move back to the all-important race for the Hockey East playoffs and the standings have tightened up since last week. Three points separate ninth place UMass from sixth place Providence, with Northeastern sitting squarely in the middle. For housekeeping purposes, we’re going to start including the magic number for clinching a playoff berth: the Huskies have 7 games remaining and the magic number is 5. That means it will take 5 wins to guarantee a spot in the playoffs, regardless of results from other teams.
First, here’s where we stand: Read more…

It was perhaps the most exciting women’s hockey game that WRBB has ever covered, and an instant classic. Northeastern broke a 13-year spell without the Women’s Beanpot trophy, after dominating the tournament in its first two decades of existence. On Tuesday night, the Huskies defeated Boston University 4-3 in overtime to claim their record 15th Beanpot trophy. Click here for the box score

BOSTON — You could sense the tidal wave looming. Two goals, both off turnovers, both soft ones that goaltender Chris Rawlings wants back. And yet, the Huskies still had enough life to convert on a 5-on-3 opportunity to make it a reasonable 2-1 game after the first period. But everything the Huskies did from that point on seemed to turn out horribly wrong, while everything the Eagles touched turned into gold (and, found its way into the goal). Boston College proceeded to score two shorthanded tallies, making it clear before the third period even started that the Huskies were outmatched in a game that was billed as rematch of last year’s epic Beanpot final.
