Stony Brook 76, NU 69: Seawolves Rally Late to Stun Sliding Huskies

February 20th, 2012

What happened?

The backcourt trio of Joel Smith, Jonathan Lee and Quincy Ford got Northeastern off to a blazing start against Stony Brook on Saturday. The sharpshooters began the contest a perfect seven of seven from three point distance, pushing NU to a 35-28 lead with 2:23 remaining in the opening half. With a combined 27 points from these three it appeared as though the Huskies would enter the locker room with a comfortable lead. In the final 35 seconds, things deteriorated rapidly for the hosts. Seawolves guard Dave Coley turned a missed Northeastern jump shot into a layup and was fouled on the play. Though he missed the ensuing free throw, Stony Brook got the offensive rebound and cashed in with a three pointer with four seconds remaining in the half. The Huskies quickly tried to inbound the ball to get a final shot off, but Smith was stripped on the entry pass and Coley banked in a turnaround jumper as the buzzer sounded to knot the score at 35.

Both squads looked sluggish to begin the second half before back-to-back threes by Smith pushed the Huskies to a seven point advantage. Northeastern stretched the lead to as many as nine with under six minutes remaining. Turnovers, poor rebounding and foul trouble doomed the Huskies from there on out, however. After a Coley three cut the deficit to two with 3:14 to play, consecutive giveaways by the Northeastern offense allowed Stony Brook to take the lead. On the second turnover, Lee raced up court and wrapped up Coley, getting whistled for an intentional foul. The Seawolves tacked on six points in a row thanks to offensive rebounds off missed free throws and forcing Lee to foul out with 2:17 to go. The Huskies got as close as three but Coley made his final six shots from the free throw line to complete Stony Brook’s comeback. Read more…

NU 70, Towson 51: Hot Shooting Help Huskies Top Tigers

February 15th, 2012

What happened?:

After an ultra-slow pace was featured in the Huskies’ 57-48 win over Towson in January, NU looked to push the pace Tuesday night at Matthews Arena. The contest featured a number of scoring runs. After the visitors grabbed a 6-5 lead, Northeastern ran off eight consecutive points to grab a lead it never relinquished. Towson answered back shortly after, but another quick seven from the Huskies quickly pushed the advantage. Another 12-2 run gave the hosts a comfortable lead just before the halftime break, but Towson used an 11-5 run of its own to make it 37-27 at the end of the half.

Northeastern came out slow to start the second stanza, going nearly the first four minutes without a field goal. Towson didn’t fare much better, opening 1 of 6 from the floor in the opening minutes. Eventually Northeastern found its stroke, using a 14-2 run to put the game out of reach. The Huskies pushed their lead to as many as 25 before emptying the bench and earning a 70-51 decision. ODU 69, NU 57: Monarchs Maneuver Past Huskies Late, Sweep Season Series

January 24th, 2012

What happened?

Forty-eight hours after dropping a 71-53 decision at Drexel Saturday afternoon, the Huskies were back in action Monday evening at Old Dominion. The Huskies didn’t seem to show any fatigue from the short rest and long bus ride to Norfolk, Va. Quincy Ford nailed a three and converted a layup down low for the Huskies’ first five points, and both teams traded buckets over the game’s first 10 minutes. An advantage on the glass and added scoring punch off the bench from Chris Cooper and Trian Iliadis allowed the Monarchs to build a lead as large as 11 over the next five minutes. NU big man Kauri Black got going late by scoring six points and adding a block and two assists in the final minutes of the half to help the visitors get back in the game and trail 28-25 at halftime.

More hard work on the backboards allowed ODU to push ahead in the second half, grabbing an eight point lead with 9:55 to play. Northeastern hung around, however, and pressure defense forced turnovers which the Huskies converted into points to trail 49-47 with 6:50 to play.

The turning point of the game came with 4:44 to play. With the Huskies trailing 53-49, a poor inbounds pass was intercepted by Cooper near midcourt. Trying to prevent an easy layup or dunk, Black reached out and grabbed Cooper around the waist. The officials deemed the foul intentional, allowing ODU to get two free throws and the ball while Black’s night was done with five fouls. The momentum swing doomed the Huskies, who went 4:53 without a field goal. A late 11-1 run sealed a 69-57 victory for the hosts. Read more…

Drexel 71, NU 53: Dragons Drain Shots From Deep to Devastate Huskies

January 22nd, 2012

What happened?
Northeastern got off to a fast start on Wednesday night against Georgia State, hitting 8 of 10 three pointers in the opening half. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they got a dose of their own medicine Saturday at Drexel. The Dragons began the contest hitting 10 of their first 12 shots, including 5 of 6 from beyond the arc. At the 10:56 mark of the opening half, the hosts sported a 25-7 advantage.

Just when it appeared as though Northeastern was in the midst of a blowout, the visitors sprung off the mat and ran off 15 consecutive points to make it 25-22 with 3:35 remaining in the half. NU did so by establishing itself in the paint, collecting 12 points down low. Meanwhile the Drexel offense struggled to get operate, missing five shots and committing six turnovers. After the seven-and-a-half minute drought DU responded, using an 8-0 run of its own to enter halftime up 33-25. Read more…
