NU 5, BU 4: Huskies claim bittersweet OT win in finale

March 5th, 2012

BOSTON — The game had no meaning for the home team, and little real meaning for the visitors. But this was Northeastern-BU. The game always means something, if only to foment the bitter (if one-sided) rivalry that these two neighbors renew three-plus times each season. And it felt that way on Saturday night at Matthews Arena, as Northeastern came out with an intensity and determination that had been lacking in the second half of their season, refusing to give in and coming away with a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory to finish the regular season. And it fit the script: Vinny Saponari exacted a bit of revenge on his former team, potting the game-winner to send Matthews Arena into a frenzy one final time.

BOSTON — It was a fitting end to the Huskies’ season. A solid period of play over a ranked opponent, on the road, an early lead, followed by a devastating barrage of offense from Boston University in the second period to seal a 5-2 victory at Agganis Arena on Friday night. With UMass defeating Merrimack in Amherst, it eliminated Northeastern from postseason contention. The Huskies gave up their 11th shorthanded goal of the season, while Chris Rawlings was pulled after two periods of play.
