BREAKING: Cronin, O’Connell suspended indefinitely for possible recruiting violations

February 18th, 2011

This is a Northeastern Athletics press release. More to come…

“Northeastern University has discovered potential NCAA violations with respect to the recruitment of prospective student-athletes in the sport of men’s ice hockey. The possible violations relate to telephone and text message legislation and were revealed during the course of routine internal compliance monitoring.

The university immediately contacted its all-sport conference—the Colonial Athletic Association—and is working closely and cooperatively with the conference office to continue its investigation.

As a result of the initial findings, the university has suspended head men’s ice hockey coach Greg Cronin and assistant men’s ice hockey coach Albie O’Connell indefinitely.

Assistant coach Sebastien Laplante will lead the team during the suspension.

“We are taking this action now to reinforce a culture of integrity within our department,” said director of athletics Peter Roby. “We are committed to operating an athletics program that is reflective of the values of the university we represent. It is imperative that we conduct our activities in full accordance with NCAA and conference rules. We are dedicated to that effort, and we are taking all appropriate steps to ensure that is the case.”

Because the investigation is ongoing, the university will have no additional comment at this time.”
