WRBB Sports Completes 2009-2010 Season

April 23rd, 2010

This past Wednesday, WRBB Sports completed its 2009-2010 broadcast season with coverage of the 21st annual Baseball Beanpot championship. It was the end to a journey of over 25,000 miles from coast to coast, originating from 31 different road broadcast sites, and spanning 17 different states. It was another year of growth for the station - student web traffic was up 10%, and direct non-referred traffic was up 7%.

WRBB’s commitment to on delivering live streaming audio to several mobile platforms resulted in a whopping 100% increase in mobile-based web traffic and listenership. Huskies fans can now listen to WRBB through Northeastern’s “Go Huskies” iPhone/iPod App, WRBB’s iPhone/iPod compatible web stream, Nobex Radio Companion for Blackberry, and through several media players for Windows Mobile devices.

This year, WRBB graduates four distinguished seniors:

  • Keith Lavon, who has covered Northeastern hockey on-air at WRBB for five years, and served as lead play-by-play voice for the past three seasons.
  • Jason Lavine, play-by-play voice for Northeastern basketball this past season, who began and finished his work with WRBB at UConn’s Gampel Pavillion.
  • Peter Martin, hockey analyst for WRBB, who joined Keith Lavon for two full seasons before traveling abroad this year.
  • Will Klaynman, who joined WRBB full-time in 2008 and served as lead basketball analyst this past season.

The 2009-2010 season was full of memorable highlights, and WRBB was on hand for most of them:

  • For the second consecutive year, WRBB served as the flagship station for Northeastern basketball, covering every one of the team’s 33 games including the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, and the Huskies’ first trip to the NIT since 2005.
  • WRBB continued its strong tradition of hockey coverage, broadcasting 30 Northeastern hockey games including a trip to Colorado College (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and, for the first time, live coverage from Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass.
  • In the final season of Northeastern football, WRBB was on hand for nine of the final 11 games, including a trip to eventual national champion Villanova (Villanova, Pa.) and a rain-soaked final home game against Hofstra.
  • WRBB expanded its coverage to include women’s hockey, with the Sun Life Frozen Fenway and Women’s Beanpot
  • Additionally, Northeastern women’s soccer clinched its 2009 regular season championship on WRBB, and hosted the CAA tournament at Parsons Field, also covered live by WRBB.
  • Finally, WRBB brought Northeastern baseball back to the radio after a one-year hiatus, airing seven games, including both rounds of the 21st annual Baseball Beanpot tournament.

In all, WRBB’s travel commitment is unmatched by any student station in the country, as shown by the station’s 2009-2010 travel log (miles logged on a round-trip basis):
