Roby, Coen renegotiating contract amid speculation

March 31st, 2010

This week, as coaching jobs at Siena and Boston College became available, speculation began to swirl about the future of Huskies head coach Bill Coen. That speculation was downplayed by Northeastern athletic director Peter Roby, who maintained that Coen is Northeastern’s head coach for the foreseeable future.

Roby acknowledged that both sides have been renegotiating Coen’s contract, an extension on which was signed during the 2009 off-season. It was not disclosed how many years the extension covers, or if there was any salary change.

“We are currently negotiating new terms, which have not yet been agreed upon,” Roby said of the contract, adding, “We are excited for the future of our basketball program with Bill Coen as our head coach.”

In addition to contract negotiations, the athletic department is currently working on its 2010-2011 budget, which is not expected to be complete until May. This includes the reallocation of resources following the termination of Northeastern football in November, as well as recruiting and travel budgets for the upcoming year.

BC fires Skinner, Coen named as possible candidate

March 30th, 2010

Earlier this morning, the Boston Globe’s Mark Blaudschun reported that Boston College fired head coach Al Skinner, just days after Skinner interviewed for the opening at St. John’s University. Though BC has requested permission to talk with two coaches (Richmond’s Chris Mooney and Cornell’s Steve Donahue), the report names Northeastern’s Bill Coen as another possibility for consideration, as he is “thought to be on his short list” of candidates.

Late Sunday, Coen was mentioned as a possible candidate for the head coaching position at Siena.

ESPN: Coen a candidate to take Siena job

March 28th, 2010

ESPN.com’s Andy Katz is reporting that Bill Coen is one of the top outside candidates to replace Fran McCaffery at Siena, after McCaffery picked up the head coaching job at Iowa. Northeastern athletic director Peter Roby announced to the SGA earlier this year that Coen had been signed to a contract extension, but the terms of the contract were never formally announced or released.

This season, Coen coached the Huskies to a 20-14 finish, their best record since 2005, and his first 20-win season as head coach at Northeastern.

Today on the Dog Pound Sports Sound

March 26th, 2010

It’s the final show of the season! Tune in for our thoughts on the year gone by, or give us your best and worst memories of the year by calling into the program at (617) 373-2658. You can also shoot us an e-mail at sports@wrbbradio.org. So, what do we have for you on today’s show? A lot:

  • We look back at a landmark season for Northeastern basketball. Even without winning in big games, support for the team exploded, the team earned nearly 20 televised games, and had a chance to do big things.
  • What were the best and worst moments of the season? There are many to choose from for both, but what were the highest of highs and the lowest of lows this year in Northeastern sports? In addition, if you could change the outcome of one game, which would you pick?
  • While this season was good, and for the first time in years, the long-term futures of hockey and basketball at Northeastern look bright. That said, what is the one thing you want to see changed next season? It can be team performance, game-day atmosphere, scheduling, anything! It’s time to empty the idea bank, and we’ll do it this week.
  • Finally, we’ll look back at the last five years for four of our graduating seniors: Keith Lavon, Peter Martin, Jason Lavine, and Will Klaynman.

It all gets underway at 3:00 p.m. live on air and streaming online at WRBBSports.com
