Live Blog: Hockey at UNH

October 23rd, 2009

Live chat and live blog presented by the . We’ll be live-blogging the game here, and you can interact with us on our live chat above.

7:00 p.m. – Starting lineups. Noticeably absent for Northeastern is Drew Meunch. He’s out with what’s being described as an upper-body injury.

7:01 p.m. - Starting a few minutes later than normal tonight due to TV – we’ll also have the customary TV timeouts.

7:06 p.m. – We’re underway, Northeastern controlling play in the opening minute.

7:10 p.m. – First power play of the night, UNH with too many men. One breakaway for the wildcats, Rawlings gives up the rebound and the crowd gasps, but it’s cleared out.

7:12 p.m. – Power play expires, NU gets only one shot on net.

7:14 p.m. – Randy Guzior looking pretty good filling Drew Meunch’s spot. Mike Hewkin was moved to the second defensive pairing.

7:18 p.m. – Guzior is in the box for holding… first UNH power play.

7:23 p.m. – Another TV timeout. It’s so strange when you’re at the arena, just waiting to restart play for no apparent reason.

7:29 p.m.Saw this post on Uni Watch the other day critiquing college hockey jerseys from the NCAA tournament in the spring. Sorry guys, the black jerseys always look good.

7:31 p.m. – Rawlings leaves a loose puck in the crease, and it’s an easy cleanup job for UNH in front. Dalton Speelman gets his first career goal. …and the fish gets thrown on the ice! Always loved that tradition.

7:36 p.m. – Rawlings making some pretty good saves, having to sprawl to the ground to make a kick save on one shot. It has to be a matter of confidence for him.

7:38 p.m. – Been quite some time since NU got a scoring chance, UNH has tilted the ice just a bit.

7:41 p.m. – First period is done, that soup in the corner smells really good… I may have to fetch some later.

7:43 p.m. – UNH band is on the ice. Their uniforms are t-shirts and khakis. Very different.

7:49 p.m. – Shot chart shows NU ripping off lots of shots from the high slot. UNH is getting their chances on the right wing and in the low slot. Most of those reached the goalie.

7:57 p.m. – Peter LeBlanc puts a loose rebound into the net. Bobby Butler assisted, and UNH takes a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the 2nd period.

8:00 p.m. – Some maintenance going on in front of Rawlings. About two feet in front of the crease there’s a divot that they’ve repaired.

8:05 p.m. – NU still officially with 6 shots on goal. It’s a deflated number any given day, but we’re almost halfway and it hasn’t bumped up much. They’ve changed the second goal to Speelman.

8:06 p.m. – Just got word that tonight is a sellout. There’s a fair number of empty seats, but you’ll get that with any sellout. Official attendance is 6,501.

8:08 p.m. – UNH again on the power play. Alex Tuckerman in the sin bin for hooking.

8:10 p.m. – Wildcats score their third goal, acute angle shot that was definitely deflected in, perhaps off of Rawlings’ hip or a UNH forward in front. Bobby Butler gets credit for the goal. NU 0-3 UNH, 13:45 left in the second period.

8:13 p.m. – Huskies get to go back on the power play, their first of the 2nd period. Borisenok in the box.

8:16 p.m. – We’re halfway through regulation play, shots on goal: NU 7, UNH 16.

8:20 p.m. – After matching minors, another penalty now on UNH, giving be a 4-on-3 for Northeastern. This is the Huskies best shot on the night, but they look a bit flat on offense. Game score probably taking a lot of the wind out of their sails.

8:24 p.m. – Some much better looks on the man advantage, but not much doing in the shot department.

8:25 p.m. – Ben on the live chat: “now we’re starting to feel the Quailer absence.”

8:27 p.m. – Another power play without a shot on goal. UNH absolutely owned that penalty kill.

8:30 p.m.Foster is playing a solid game in net, very calm on the rebound control. A 3-0 lead will help that.

8:32 p.m. – At times, Rawlings looks a bit too concerned looking for defensemen and pointing out who to cover while the play is down in his end.

8:34 p.m. – Two periods in, NU looks lost. 3-0 UNH after 40 minutes.

8:50 p.m. – Thanks to the Huntington News for sponsoring tonight’s intermission report. Third period underway. A bunch of puddles on the ice.

8:55 p.m. – Power play chance for Northeastern, and it’ll be of the 5-on-3 variety.

8:57 p.m. – Last good opportunity of the night perhaps, and Cronin wisely calls a timeout to set it up. NU needs to get some shots on target here.

8:59 p.m. - NU GOAL – Wade Macleod gets the goal, assist from Robbie Vrolyk. 14:51 to go. NU 1-3 UNH

9:04 p.m. – Closing in on the final 10 minutes, and the Huskies go on a critical penalty kill. Stop UNH here and you may have something to build on.

9:09 p.m. – UNH back on the power play with less than 10 minutes remaining in this one. Too many men on the ice for NU, but UNH gives it away with a slashing call on Peter LeBlanc.

9:13 p.m. – NU gets called for too many men again, and UNH makes them pay. Quick slapshot by Mike Sislo. NU 1-4 UNH.

9:17 p.m. – After going back to even strength, Jim Driscoll missed on a wrap-around, but Foster was out of position. The end result was a wide open goal for Wade Macleod, who put it into the open net. NU 2-4 UNH, just over 5 minutes remaining.

9:21 p.m. – Despite their second goal, NU still trails big-time in the shots department. 32-14 in favor of the Wildcats.

9:25 p.m. – Less than 3 minutes remain, the Huskies are just trying to find some positives here in the closing moments. I doubt there will be many (if any) positive things said in the post-game press conference.

9:27 p.m. – NU gets a late power play here on a boarding call to Mike Beck, just to make things interesting…

9:29 p.m. – Back to full strength, but it didn’t matter much having the extra man on that late power play. Now, will NU pull Rawlings? Doesn’t look like it.

9:31 p.m. – UNH takes a time out. I’m sure they want to make sure that if Rawlings is pulled, they’re ready to handle it.

9:32 p.m. – Empty net for NU.

9:34 p.m.And it’s a final. NU 2-4 UNH. Extra attacker did nothing for NU. I’ll have a recap/analysis later. This post-game press conference is not going to be fun.
