Off The Wires: Basketball and Winter Classic news

August 14th, 2009

>>> Mike Litos chimes in with his early analysis of Northeastern’s ”experience paradox.” Essentially, NU has a good deal of experienced starters, and a heavily inexperienced bench. He also looks at team “themes” from around the CAA. [The CAA: Life as a Mid Major]

>>> Eugene Spates, who graduated earlier this year, will play basketball in Luxembourg this fall. We are working on the story, and we will continue to update.

>>> The Boston Globe reports that tickets for the upcoming college hockey Winter Classic games will be reasonably priced. Ticket prices will be capped at $99 for the doubleheader, which features Northeastern’s women’s hockey team in the opening game against UNH. However, if you want to see the game in the toasty warmth of one of the luxury boxes, you will have to shell out more than $99. Hey, you can’t have it all. [Boston Globe]

Lavine: Utah State is a major non-conference addition

August 13th, 2009

utahstate

Who said twitter was worthless? Matt Janning sent out the first notice, and Northeastern Athletics later confirmed (both through their twitter accounts) that the Utah State Aggies basketball team will visit Matthews Arena to take on the Huskies. This is the second big-time opponent that will play here at home this year, the first being Providence College, who is completing a home-and-home series with the men’s team.

Utah State might not carry the “big time” distinction that Providence has, but they certainly can play. They are coming off a 30-5 season and an NCAA tournament bid through their WAC conference championship. They return four of five starters from last year’s team, which already has garnered strong accolades from media outlets around the country. Make no mistake, this game will be as tough as it gets for a Huskies team that already once again plays difficult non-conference opponents before the CAA schedule begins. Current opponents include Providence, Rhode Island (away), Sienna (away on ESPN), Wright St (home), and then a trip to Hawaii for St Mary’s and a possible matchup with PAC-10 powerhouse USC. Northeastern will be battle-tested by the time they open their conference schedule, but this time, some of the “big” teams are coming to Matthews.

Northeastern involved in Winter Classic

August 12th, 2009

Hockey East announced today that a press conference will be held at Fenway Park on August 20 to announce the college component of the 2010 Winter Classic. Numerous media outlets including the Boston Herald and WEEI.com have confirmed that a Boston College-Boston University men’s game will be preceded by a New Hampshire-Northeastern women’s game. As of now the women are scheduled to play UNH on January 8 at Matthews Arena, one can assume with a fair amount of accuracy that indeed is the game that will be moved to Fenway Park.

No word yet on if seperate tickets will be needed for women’s and men’s game of if it’s a Beanpot-like single ticket event.

Off The Wires: Sponsors, a new opponent

August 12th, 2009

>>> Northeastern athletics will sport two new sponsors in the upcoming season. W.B. Mason and AT&T have signed on. AT&T’s branding  already includes a promotion for student discounts on cell phone service.

>>> Senior guard Matt Janning tweeted, then NU confirmed that the Huskies will host Utah State this November in the first game of what we hear is a home-and-home series over the next two seasons.

>>> Former WRBB announcer Dan Weiss has been named play-by-play announer for the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage.
